Evidence-based supplements and tools that support muscle health, bone strength, balance, and long-term independence — curated specifically for older adults.
Supplements and tools are never a replacement for good nutrition, quality sleep, and consistent strength training. However, certain evidence-based products can support muscle health, bone health, balance, and long-term independence as we age. I've compiled a list of products I've recommended in the past, along with why I recommend them from a longevity and older-adult health perspective — including the supplements from my Nutrition Workshop, plus other tools I find helpful for my own health and longevity.
Foot strength, balance, and stability all start at the toes. Years of narrow footwear can limit toe splay, reduce sensory input from the feet, and affect balance and gait. Toe spacers can help improve toe alignment, activate intrinsic foot muscles, and enhance balance and proprioception — especially important for fall prevention and maintaining confident movement as we age.
Creatine is one of the most well-researched supplements for older adults. It supports muscle strength, power, and lean muscle mass when combined with resistance training, and there is growing evidence for cognitive and brain-health benefits as well. I recommend looking for Creapure — made in Germany, it is considered the cleanest and safest form of creatine, with rigorous quality control and testing.
Vitamin D plays a key role in bone health, muscle function, balance, and immune health. In Canada, deficiency is very common, particularly in the fall and winter months. Adequate vitamin D levels are associated with better muscle strength and a reduced risk of falls — making it an important foundation supplement for older adults.
Omega-3 fatty acids support brain health, heart health, and muscle health. EPA and DHA help reduce inflammation, support muscle protein synthesis, and are linked to slower cognitive decline. For those who don't eat fatty fish regularly, a high-quality fish oil supplement can be a valuable addition for long-term health and longevity.
Meeting protein needs becomes more challenging as we age, yet protein is critical for maintaining muscle mass, bone health, and recovery from training. Whey protein is rich in leucine — the key amino acid that triggers muscle protein synthesis. It's an easy, practical way to boost protein intake at breakfast or post-workout, especially for those who struggle to eat enough protein through whole foods alone.
For those who follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, meeting protein needs can be more challenging as we age. A high-quality plant-based protein powder — ideally a blend of pea, rice, and/or hemp — improves the amino acid profile and overall protein quality. When paired with resistance training and a well-balanced diet, it's an effective and practical way to boost daily protein intake.
Consistent nutrition is much easier when healthy meals are prepped and ready to go. Souper Cubes let you portion soups, stews, chili, cooked grains, or protein-rich meals into single servings that can be frozen and reheated easily. This is incredibly helpful for maintaining regular protein intake, reducing decision fatigue, and making good nutrition more accessible on busy or low-energy days.
This is one of my favourite tools for supporting a healthy daily rhythm, especially during darker mornings or long Canadian winters. Bright light early in the day signals to your brain that it's time to be awake, alert, and active — supporting energy, mood, focus, and a consistent sleep-wake cycle. As the day goes on you can lower the brightness, supporting your circadian rhythm and evening wind-down. Good light exposure is one of the simplest ways to support better sleep, recovery, and long-term health.
These glasses make it much easier to get the benefits of morning light exposure while moving through your normal routine — reading, working, or getting ready for the day. Designed to support circadian rhythm, energy, mood, and sleep timing, with adjustable intensity for flexibility. Better light exposure earlier in the day can support better sleep, steadier energy, improved recovery, and a healthier daily rhythm overall.
Whenever possible, I recommend Canadian brands and Canadian-made products. Supporting Canadian companies often means better quality control, clearer ingredient sourcing, and standards that align well with our regulations. Where Canadian options met my quality criteria, those are what I've included.
While the links above go to Amazon, for those of us in Collingwood, the convenience matters. Ordering online often saves time and energy versus travelling to the GTA for specific products. My goal is to make high-quality, evidence-based choices as accessible and realistic as possible.
If you ever have questions about whether a supplement or product is appropriate for you, or how to pair it with your training and nutrition, don't hesitate to ask. My goal is always to help you make informed, practical choices that support strength, confidence, and independence for years to come.
